Book Review of "Sun Stand Still" by Steven Furtick

Furtick starts off his Sun Stand Still by saying, "This book is not a snuggie. The words on these pages will not go down like Ambien. I'm not writing to calm or coddle you. With God's help, I intend to incite a riot in your mind." With this alluring challenge I took to reading Sun Stand Still. At first I grew a little disappointed. I felt like this fit more like a snuggie, making me comfortable and echoing the words I have already heard from so many others. This book is ultimately about prayer and engaging, as Furtick puts it in an audacious faith. But it started off slow. Pray big prayers, dream big dreams. There was not much originality to the book except for his overuse of the terms audacious, sun stand still, and page 23 vision. But as I read further I began to be challenged and even fell a little uncomfortable. About half way through the book Furtick turns up the heat and really starts to challenge our prayer lives, and more importantly our image of who God is. I began to feel spurred on not so much to pray great things, but to pray in a great and confident way. The more I read the more grew I grew to like this book. I particularly love the way that Furtick used stories of his family to bring the reader into a more intimate and relational message, one that the reader could place themselves into and feel a part of the story. He has a way of challenging the reader without pushing them away. This is definitely a book I would suggest reading. I am not sure I would suggest bumping it to number 1 on your list, but it definitely should be on your list.
