There are many things I think that the church as a whole is missing in regards to spiritual disciplines. This is what Stovall Weems is attempting to awake the individual church goer out of. If we want to know God then we need to pursue God. Fasting is a discipline that is all but forgotten and I appreciate the emphasis that Weems puts on it. That being said I was not thrilled with Awakening at all. I think on of the worse things the church can do is stop being the church and start being the individual. Awakening focuses on the spiritual disciple of the individual and does not have a strong emphasis on community. Fasting is important yes, but it is near impossible to remain committed to if done alone. I think many spiritual discipline are in fact selfish in motive. I want more of God, I want to feel him more, I want to be closer. The gospel is not about me and what I can get, but it is about others and what I can do in service and love for them. If we want a spiritual awakening what we need to do is to live our lives in the way Jesus lived his, and that is to surround ourselves with community in fellowship and to serve always and anytime we can get the opportunity to sprinkled with some times of seclusion and prayer, not defined by it.
